Boston may be small but we have our very own fashion week – did you know that? Well, now you do. The official Boston Fashion Week kicks off tonight with multiple events around town. The opening gala being held at the Mandarin hotel is sure to be the swankiest spot. Want tickets? You can still get them. Want to participate in Fashion Week but hoping to not spend $250 a ticket? There are still plenty of other events taking place over the next week, many of which have a low-cost of entry. Highlights include: The Lights, Camera, Fashion event at the Revere on Friday night, the tent events on Saturday afternoon, the Copley Catwalk fashion shows highlighting emerging talent and the Fashion Forward event next Friday evening at the ICA. Visit the official website for a full listing of events and ticketing information.
Happy Monday, readers.
I’d like to take this forum to vent my deep confusion and concern over a growing trend. Over the last several weeks I have seen many girls/young women (figure, mid 40s and under) walking around town with perfectly nice outfits on. What’s the problem with that? Well, they seem to want to cover their nice outfits in hoodies. Now, I know yoga gear is the new standard for weekend wear but if you bother to invest money into seemingly nice clothes and then strut into an office please, please, please leave the hoodie/yoga jacket at home.
Think about it – if the short walk to work is your runway for the day, then why would you mask your coordinated self in something so dumpy and unpolished? Are you going to the grocery store or are you going to work? If you are a professional, working woman I ask that you leave the hoodie at home and wear it to Whole Foods as appropriate (or gasp – maybe even the gym). Confused over what you could potentially wear instead of your hoodie? Here are a few ideas – many of which are casual and useful outside of the office:
Capes/Ponchos – I wear my Minnie Rose Ruana often (I have three…). Capes are stylish and soft and asymmetrical and NOT a hoodie
Trenches – Lightweight and perfect, trench coats are perfect for fall – go for color if you find the beige too boring
Cardis – For the warmer fall days, cardigans and wraps work well. Remember that layering can look professional (layer with tailored pieces – that’s the key!)
Blazers and Jackets – I love, love, love blazers and similarly structured jackets. What’s not to love? Regardless of what you spend, it’s easy to look chic. Some of my go-tos are Tory Burch, J. Crew, BCBG, Loft and even Forever 21
Add some of these items to your fall shopping list if you don’t see any in your closet. And please, give that hoodie a rest.
Hello readers! Happy Friday!
Out with the old and in with the new. Karen Millen closed her Boston outpost in Copley Mall a few weeks ago. What’s taking her place? Tory Burch. I saw the signs going up this morning at 6:30 when walking to the gym. Yay for new stores and yay for a proper Tory Burch shop in Boston – it’s long overdue.
I have a hair appointment tonight. It’s a very, very necessary hair appointment. How necessary? Well it’s taking me away from the Fashion’s Night Out activities in Boston so that should tell you something.
If you follow fashion then you know that tonight is the 4th Annual Fashion’s Night Out (FNO). Oh what I would give to be in NYC tonight! It’s a crying shame. That said, Boston did a great job presenting its own FNO last year and this year it’s bound to be an even bigger crowd pleaser. This after-hours shopping event will feature live music, munchies, cocktails, treats, discounts and so much more! Newbury Street will be closed to traffic, Copley will host a live fashion show, and stores around the city will be celebrating. Unless you have an important hair appointment, I expect you to partake. There is really no other excuse that would take me away from great sales, goodie bags, champagne and the opportunity to dance in the street.
For a full listing of events, participating stores and other FNO Boston activity, check out the event website or their Facebook page which has been streaming updates all day. Kick off fall the right way and enjoy Fashion’s Night Out!
