I’m looking for some cool new jewelry. Any new “must haves” out there?

    • stylegirlbos at 8:44 pm #

Hey Ashley! Thanks for the question.

Spring is bringing all sorts of trends to stores. You can expect to see large colored gems, tassels and fringe, simple/architectural designs and plastic funware (think playing dress-up when you’re 13). Layering necklaces of different lengths, combining metal tones and bangle bracelets are still on point.

Depending on your style, you may run to, or run from, these trends. A few go-to stores that I love for jewels are Anthropologie (earthy), Banana Republic (shiny), J Crew (bauble), Forever 21 (youth), H&M (trendy), Erwin Pearl (costume), and Neiman Marcus. For local Boston shops, try Good, Shake the Tree, Tis Tik and Michele Mercaldo – all carry unique and beautiful pieces.

      Hope this helps!

I’m always so confused…when wearing dresses in the winter (think more business attire versus fun) is it best to always stick with tights or do people still wear hose? I feel tights are sometimes too casual, but as for hose I am stuck on what color to wear except for sheer black (do people wear any other colors anymore?) – but sheer black doesn’t always work either. And when is it appropriate versus tacky to wear patterned hose/tights? Advice please Style Girl!

      Hey Sweet J!

Thanks for the note. Don’t be confused. Opaque tights are in – period. They are professional – period.

The type of nylon someone wears is strictly preference on style. Colored tights are still in fashion but I would err on the side of neutral colors when it comes to work (grey, navy, brown, etc.). As far as patterns are concerned, go with a small check pattern over a larger pattern for the office. The point for day-time pattern is to add texture and less so design.

As for traditional panty hose, I would only pair these when I’m in a suit. They are a very conservative, borderline bland option.

Some of my favorite brands for tights are Hue, Spanx, TopShop, Wolford and J Crew.

      Hope this helps!

StyleGirl – I am hoping that winter boots are on the way out, but we have a few more months until flip flop weather. Any ideas for functional, but not dumpy, footwear to commute to work in or for running errands during the weekends in the early spring?

      Hey SoBoGolden!

Sorry for the delayed response. I wasn’t stumped by your question but I do have too many ideas for a short entry! First thing first – there are a lot of options for footwear but you’re right, the weeks between March and June can be daunting and the weather is really unpredictable. Here are a few ideas for you, keeping in mind that what you ultimately choose will depend on your personal taste, the forecast and the amount you walk about town.

For wet weather, go with the classic Hunter boot or with a Sperry bootie. Yes, the bright checkered rain boots are cute but they are distracting and can ruin an outfit in an instant.

For a long walk, stick with the classic ballet flat. The good news is that ballet flats are still in style this season and the color options are great. Check out Piperlime for a wide selection. Another flat alternative is the classic loafer. YES – they are back but this time they are better than ever. You can find a lot of bright colored options at department stores or can go high end with a pair of Tod’s (worth the investment, btw).

Need a little height but still need comfort? Look to the low wedge. Cole Hann, Steve Madden, Aldo and Nine West have a lot of great options this season. Lacoste even has a canvas peep toe wedge which would be great for weekends.

Now go put away those Uggs.
      Hope this helps!
