Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye

11 Nov

Over the past two years, I have posted about many things and have shared many of my “favorites” with you. Well, all good things must come to an end. Life has gotten very busy and I have decided to channel some of my creative energy to other projects. I have loved writing for you and I have loved hearing from you. I leave you with this quote from one of my very favorite style girls – Audrey Hepburn:

“I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and… I believe in miracles.”

Lana Del Rey As The New Face Of H&M

25 Jun

Another new face coming to H&M. I wonder if I’ll look like her if I buy a few things…wouldn’t that be nice?

His Fashion Blog

I love Lana. Her music & fashion combination makes her just perfect, and that definitely made her a little more interesting to the fashion industry. Aside from landing a modeling contract and having a Mulberry bag named/designed after her, according to Page Six, Lana has also won a contract with H&M to become the new face of the brand.

An “anonymous” source told The New York Post that, just like Madonna & Kylie Minogue, the 26 years old singer is shooting an H&M campaign in New York.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but H&M haven’t denied the rumors either, so let’s wait and hope!

It’s a Wrap!

23 Apr

I love pretty packages. I also love my friends that appreciate the beauty of well-wrapped packages as much as I do.  Today, MB is back to talk a little about her favorite wrap styles. If you need further inspiration after reading then think of this the next time you throw something in a gift bag:

“Wrapping is self-expression. It is an extension of the gift. It is the soul of the giver communicating to the soul of the recipient.”

– Megumi Inouye

I am one of those girls who has always judged a book by its cover. Thus, I have adopted the philosophy that gifts should be wrapped with as much love and care as went into selecting the gift. Here are some of my favorite sources for unique gift wrapping as well as a DIY project, which I will attest isn’t unique or that time consuming but a good “green” idea none-the-less.

Smock – Smock has become one of my go-to sources for all things paper. And the reason why? They use bamboo paper, which just happens to be a truly sustainable and renewable resource. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet; grows without pesticides or fertilizers; and requires very little water. Cool, right?! I also love the fact that their gift wrap has complementary designs on both sides so makes a really cute package with 2+ gifts. Check out the Chatham and Pollen wraps – perfect for your spring/summer gift giving!

Chewing the Cud – A fabric wrap… why didn’t I think of this? As you will see, you can choose a wrap based on the significance of the gift: hope, bliss, luck, thanks, and wisdom. For a tutorial on how to wrap with fabric, check out their blog posting:

D-I-Y – I am fairly certain that since you are reading this blog you enjoy shopping almost as much as StyleGirl and I do. And as such, I am sure you have an endless supply of shopping bags in your closet. This past Christmas I decided to use my two large Saks bags stocked with shopping bags from every one of my favorite stores to wrap my holiday gifts. Simply remove the handles, cut off the bottom of the bag, and voila, you have some wrapping paper. For those simple craft bags that look like a grocery store bag, I simply added a little flourish with my stamp pad and created a custom and ever-so-green package.

Looking for some local resources for great wrap? My top three local spots are:

Rugg Road Paper Company – 105 Charles Street
Bob Slate Stationer – 1288 Massachusetts Avenue
Paper Source – locations in Back Bay, Cambridge and Brookline

And as I always remind myself, to give is to receive so enjoy giving a gift with love to those you love the most!

Thanks for the great tips, MB!

A Playroom for Bebe

16 Apr

Oh the little ones grow up so fast. Just over nine months ago I held my precious newborn in my arms. Today he is crawling around my house like a little truck (or as my husband says, a little Swiffer). Since my son is now too old for hour-long cuddles and stationary play, it was time to take his darling little nursery which held a twin bed  and significant hidden storage and make space so he can have some adventures of his own. As a reminder, our final nursery design looked like this first picture.

We needed to do a few things to make this space more kid friendly.

  • We needed to remove the bed to create floorspace
  • We needed to get shelving for books and supplies
  • We needed a changing table (we were able to avoid this initially by using a change tray on the bed)
  • We needed to find fun toy storage so that toys were kept tidy but accessible
  • We needed more floor coverage so he could get better traction as he crawled about

So, to start, we moved the bed out and got a decent looking changing table that provided ample shelving. I found ours on Overstock for under $200. We then bought a few fantastic canvas bins from 3 Sprouts which add color and character to the room. After searching high and low I found a great rug by Dash & Albert. Their rugs are versatile, affordable and washable – perfect!

I wanted to make this space functional and inviting – on every level. So I realized that we needed some floor seating. In addition to finding a great kid-size beanbag from Land of Nod, I purchased two blue and white poufs which can be seen in the pics I’ve posted here (I actually got a very good deal on One Kings Lane but you can find a million poufs on Etsy). I also purchased some letter pillows from Serena & Lily. For some visual fun, I placed his simple wicker toy chest in his new red wagon. The shiny new wagon was just sitting in our basement and since he’s still too young to enjoy it outside, I figured he could admire it inside.

The room will continue to change as his needs, interests and toys change. I love how this space is bright, colorful and inviting. He loves to play in his room but really who wouldn’t?

Breaking news (or at least to me): Do-gooders unite! TOMS launches line of ballet flat

Sheena Young

Finally TOMS have released a line of ballet flats due to overwhelming demand.

I love to support companies that give back. Too many businesses forget that they are part of a community, whether a local circle or a larger, global community, it isn’t just about driving profits.

TOMS is a footwear company that match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. ONE FOR ONE. It doesn’t hurt that these shoes are so comfortable and stylishly casual.

They ship to Australia so buy yourself a pair now. They are true to size but the canvas does stretch out so if you’re between half sizes, go for the smaller ones.

What I Learned at Neiman Marcus

16 Dec

The other night our company hosted a little event at Neiman Marcus. It was an event focused on style – dressing for success – for work and play (yay, holiday parties!). Let me first say that I didn’t learn anything entirely new BUT I was reminded of many important style lessons and was exposed to some great trends for holiday dressing. So I figured I’d share what I learned at Neiman Marcus (while drinking champagne, of course…)

Lesson 1: First impressions are influenced more by how you look than what you say (only 7% of people seem to listen!)

Lesson 2: Don’t worry about size – ever. Worry about fit. Sizes are only meant as guides – not rules

Lesson 3: Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and colors but be careful about putting too much pattern on places that you want to play down (a larger bust, wider hips, etc.)

Lesson 4: Sequins are fun but they draw attention so be careful wearing shiny pieces – matte sequins are more flattering and can also transition from day wear into evening wear more easily

Lesson 5: Velvet and crushed corduroy are in – for men and women – embrace it!

Lesson 6: Colorblocking works – it’s generally flattering and it adds interest.  Try it

Lesson 7: Pay attention to the drape of a fabric. It can make all the difference

Lesson 8: Accessorize! Being under-accessorized can age you

Lesson 9: Leave the long black coat in the closet. Colored coats are a must

Lesson 10: You are better off filling your closet with dresses than skirts. Dresses are more flexible wardrobe pieces

Lesson 11: When dressing in separates, balance your look – pattern on top, simple on bottom and vice versa

Lesson 12: Adding collars (esp. faux fur for winter) can dress up anything

Lesson 13: Love thy tweed blazer!

Lesson 14: Aubergine, Aubergine, Aubgerine

Lesson 15: Pick up a bow tie for your man – it’s what the best dressed are wearing

What lesson do you love?

Lulu Inspires

15 Nov

I love Lululemon. I love the quality of their products and their design is just awesome. Although a bit pricey, the stuff is well worth it! It washes well, packs well and has a really stylish fit too. Here is a jacket that I recently bought and just love.

In addition to loving the Lululemon products, I love the brand too. It’s fresh, socially responsible and motivating. I don’t know if you have ever taken the time to read their shopping bag. I never have (then again, I don’t really have time to read shopping bags…) but yesterday I went to put my lunch into one of their bags and a few of the quotes caught my eye. I read further and by the end I had inspiration coming out of my ears.  Here are a few to help get you through your day…

  • The pursuit of happiness is the source of all unhappiness
  • Life is full of setbacks. Success is determined by how you handle setbacks
  • Do it now! Do it now! Do it now!
  • Do one thing a day that scares you
  • Set goals! Write down your short and long terms goals four times a year. Two personal, two business and two health goals. Goal setting triggers your subconscious computer
  • Visualize your eventual demise. It can have an amazing effect on how you live for the moment

So, love the products and/or love the company, check out Lululemon, especially their online gift guides. You can shop online or hit up one of their local stores in Burlington, Dedham, Natick, Hingham or Boston.
